Molecules are the smallest fundamental units of chemical compounds that can take part in a chemical reaction and still retain the composition and chemical properties of the compound. They consist of two or more atoms bonded together through chemical bonds, which can be covalent, ionic, or metallic, depending on the nature of the atoms involved and the method of electron sharing or transfer. Molecules can vary greatly in size and complexity, ranging from simple diatomic molecules like oxygen (O2) and hydrogen (H2) to large and complex biomolecules like proteins and DNA.
