Scientists Solve an Origin of Life Mystery

Abstract Biochemistry Origin of life Concept

The discoveries may alter scientists’ perceptions of the environments in which life initially originated.

Seawater might have supplied the phosphorus required for emerging life.

Researchers from the Universities of Cambridge and Cape Town may have found a solution to the mystery of how phosphorus came to be an essential component of life on Earth by recreating prehistoric seawater containing the element in a laboratory.

Their findings, which were published in the journal Nature Communications, suggest that seawater may be the missing source of phosphate, suggesting that it could have been present in sufficient quantities to support life without the need for particular environmental conditions.

“This could really change how we think about the environments in which life first originated,” said Professor Nick Tosca from the University of Cambridge, who was one of the authors of the study.

The research, which was headed by University of Cambridge Ph.D. student Matthew Brady, reveals that early seawater may have carried 1,000–10,000 times more phosphate than previously thought, provided the water contained a lot of iron.

Phosphate is a crucial component of DNA and RNA, which are the building blocks of life, although it is one of the least common elements in the universe relative to its biological significance. Phosphate is also relatively inaccessible in its mineral form – it can be difficult to dissolve in water so that life can utilize it.

Scientists have long suspected that phosphorus became part of biology early on, but they have only recently begun to recognize the role of phosphate in directing the synthesis of molecules required by life on Earth, “Experiments show it makes amazing things happen – chemists can synthesize crucial biomolecules if there is a lot of phosphate in solution,” said Tosca, Professor of Mineralogy & Petrology at Cambridge’s Department of Earth Sciences.

However, there has been debate over the precise circumstances required to create phosphate. According to some research, phosphate should actually be even less accessible to life when iron is plentiful. However, this is disputed since the early Earth’s atmosphere was oxygen-poor and iron would have been widespread.

They used geochemical modeling to simulate the early Earth’s conditions in order to understand how life came to rely on phosphate and the kind of environment that this element would have evolved in.

“It’s exciting to see how simple experiments in a bottle can overturn our thinking about the conditions that were present on the early Earth,” said Brady.

In the lab, they made up seawater with the same chemistry thought to have existed in Earth’s early history. They also ran their experiments in an atmosphere starved of oxygen, just like on ancient Earth.

The team’s results suggest that seawater itself could have been a major source of this essential element.

“This doesn’t necessarily mean that life on Earth started in seawater,” said Tosca, “It opens up a lot of possibilities for how seawater could have supplied phosphate to different environments— for instance, lakes, lagoons, or shorelines where sea spray could have carried the phosphate onto land.”

Previously scientists had come up with a range of ways of generating phosphate, some theories involving special environments such as acidic volcanic springs or alkaline lakes, and rare minerals found only in meteorites.

“We had a hunch that iron was key to phosphate solubility, but there just wasn’t enough data,” said Tosca. The idea for the team’s experiments came when they looked at waters that bathe sediments deposited in the modern Baltic Sea. “It is unusual because it is high in both phosphate and iron — we started to wonder what was so different about those particular waters.”

In their experiments, the researchers added different amounts of iron to a range of synthetic seawater samples and tested how much phosphorous it could hold before crystals formed and minerals separated from the liquid. They then built these data points into a model that could predict how much phosphate ancient seawater could hold.

The Baltic Sea pore waters provided one set of modern samples they used to test their model with, “We could reproduce that unusual water chemistry perfectly,” said Tosca. From there they went on to explore the chemistry of seawater before any biology was around.

The results also have implications for scientists trying to understand the possibilities for life beyond Earth. “If iron helps put more phosphate in solution, then this could have relevance to early Mars,” said Tosca.

Evidence for water on ancient Mars is abundant, including old river beds and flood deposits, and we also know that there was a lot of iron at the surface and the atmosphere was at times oxygen-poor, said Tosca.

Their simulations of surface waters filtering through rocks on the Martian surface suggest that iron-rich water might have supplied phosphates in this environment too.

“It’s going to be fascinating to see how the community uses our results to explore new, alternative pathways for the evolution of life on our planet and beyond,” said Brady.

  1. “Phosphate is a crucial component of DNA … although it is one of the least common elements in the universe….” Phosphate is not an element. The critical element in phosphate is phosphorus. It is hard to take a science article seriously when the author seems oblivious to science.

  2. Your thinking is believable only to someone who thinks Ocean water or the earth came from nothing by CHANCE, hahaha. NOTHING can evolve by CHANCE. Produce your own water from nothing by your word only, then print that, id be interested to read it

  3. So …if only those in archeology and science would accept the biblical record of creation their work may have real value. The word of God carefully documents the life spans of every generation including Adam and Eve thru King David as just under 4000 years and we know that from King David to Christ to 2022 is about 2000. Just think about the value of their work if we’re based in the undeniable truth. As Jesus said” Seek the truth and you will find it” I think the event of the great flood of Noah’s tome probably altered the appearance of things explaining how these giant sharks remains were found in Nevada or near by . The flood is likely the reason for many false “discoveries” claiming to be hundreds of thousands or millions of years old . No different hominins or Neanderthals just God’s creation in his like this physically and spiritually.

    • On the contrary, it’s said a thousand years are as a day in the eyes of God, so the timescale in the Bible perhaps should not be taken literally.

    • As Jesus said” Seek the truth and you will find it”. Sometimes it helps to read and understand the words and not just regurgitate them.

The complexity of life is far beyond what scientists can understand, the organizational levels and processes involved require a creator who knows how is every species and how is every element interact to maintain such life, only someone great can make things from absolute nothing, not big bang theory, emptiness will produce emptiness after a billions of years, energy and all particles was created by the one and only GOD.

    • That need not stop us from trying to understand His toolbox.

    • So do you think this God is LESS complex than the simplest life forms on Earth? How can you so easily accept that an all-powerful, all-knowing, intelligent and loving being just happens to exist with no particular cause, reason or explanation? Where’s the logic in that?

  5. Origin of Life found in bottle… If you received a degree in academia, your university should be b-slapped. Epic stupidity that causes major concerns of an agenda to make the masses as clueless as possible. Sad days indeed.

Such a misleading title …..the article is full of could have …then it says the total opposite of what it began with relating to sea water being a contributing factor by stating that it does not mean seawater was the cause of life emerging .

True, it was a bit too definite- but remember, too, that there’s no absolute certainty in science; we can say, “we think this is how things work according to the information we have,” but new knowledge can overturn the view of the world that had heretofore held up; in a sense, maybe is all we can get.

    • Your comment is a misrepresentation of what the article says. Quote “This doesn’t necessarily mean that life on Earth STARTED in seawater”. It can still be the SOURCE of the phosphorus that caused life to begin, as the article also explains.

The Christian Bible tells us that GOD is the source of life on Planet Earth, and possibly in the whole Universe. The creation of Adam, the first man, explains this mystery in the Garden of Eden. “And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life;and man became a living soul”(Genesis 2:7). Only GOD knows the source of life on this planet. Deuteronomy 29:29, says,”The secret things belong to the LORD our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may follow all the words of this law. ” This creation narrative also explains what happens to a person when he or she dies. Ecclesiastical 12:7, says, “The dust will return to the earth as it was, and the spirit will return to GOD who gave it.” It’s the breath(soul) which GOD gave at birth that goes back to Him in heaven when a person dies. The body (dead soul without the breath) goes back to the dust at death. It doesn’t live on, as some people imagine. This idea is part of Satan’s deception, convincing people that there is consciousness after death.

    • the body stays your right the soul returns your right thus meaning your infinite thus meaning your soul reincarnates different body same soul .there were many authors of that good book u hold so close research it like a investigator and it will knock your socks off so are u enjoying your phosphate smoothies lol

  13. If I am correct the human body has the same percentage of salt that sea water has, I don’t know if all animals have this amount of salt or just mammals or just humans. concerning Phosphate this is what Wikipedia says:

” In 2007, at the current rate of consumption, the supply of phosphorus was estimated to run out in 345 years.[7] However, some scientists thought that a “peak phosphorus” would occur in 30 years and Dana Cordell from Institute for Sustainable Futures said that at “current rates, reserves will be depleted in the next 50 to 100 years”.[8] Reserves refer to the amount assumed recoverable at current market prices. In 2012 the USGS estimated world reserves at 71 billion tons, while 0.19 billion tons were mined globally in 2011.[9] Phosphorus comprises 0.1% by mass of the average rock[10] (while, for perspective, its typical concentration in vegetation is 0.03% to 0.2%),[11] and consequently there are quadrillions of tons of phosphorus in Earth’s 3×1019-ton crust,[12] albeit at predominantly lower concentration than the deposits counted as reserves, which are inventoried and cheaper to extract. If it is assumed that the phosphate minerals in phosphate rock are mainly hydroxyapatite and fluoroapatite, phosphate minerals contain roughly 18.5% phosphorus by weight. If phosphate rock contains around 20% of these minerals, the average phosphate rock has roughly 3.7% phosphorus by weight.”

  14. I’m surprised comments are even being posted. omg don’t u see the big picture.they know what there doing and u think there stupid. there preparing the next test subjects don’t u see phosphate is the natural occuring poison to test on us humans .it’s already being used so what are u gonna do to help save h up humanity

  16. Why keep the ramblings of religious/conspiracy nut jobs posted. Should hire someone to remove any comments that don’t further the scientific conversation.

  17. God is the creator of all things!! This article is ridiculous!!!!

    • Man, what a convincing argument.
I counter with: god is a coping mechanism you use to deal with the loneliness and anxiety of a world that is too big for you to think about without feeling afraid. You are emotionally isolated from the people you care about and you fill the empty space by believing that the creator of existence itself is holding you in the palm of his hand, ready to take you home and take care of you forever while everyone you don’t like will suffer.

      • No, I just find a creator far more plausible than creation due to chance and trial and error. The amount of problems in origin of life research and certain problems in evolution seem to point in that direction as well. Untill there’s any evidence that is sufficient enough to give answers to those problems. I see no reason to think otherwise.

  18. Jesus appeared in bodily form after he was crucified and rose again on the third day. He ate with the disciples and let Thomas touch the holes in his hands and the spear hole in his rib cage. Jesus said “and if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to myself, that where I am there you may be also.” Paul said “to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord”. God’s word doesn’t change, men change God’s word. Believers will be with God and Christ for eternity, unbelievers will not be in hell with their buddies, they will be alone for eternity. Every knee will bow and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord. Eternity is a long time to be wrong, simply because you believed one man’s “theory”. What makes Darwin right and God wrong? Carefully consider where you would like to spend eternity. Ask yourself how something as complex as a human, let alone all the other living things could just happen? A theory is only an opinion, 66 books written by 35 authors over a period of 1500 years without a single contradiction carrys more weight for me than one man’s theory. Just saying.

    • Darius Spearman | October 20, 2022 at 7:18 pm | Reply

Evolution be natural selection is supported by mountains of evidence. The existence of God is supported by ZERO evidence.

    • So why did the books of the Apocrypha get left out? How is it the end all word of god when the included materials were voted on by a council of men and other writings were discarded? Evolution is not “one man’s theory”, it is an area of study that has been being worked on by millions of people for hundreds of years. The only thing that kept it from being worked on more at it’s inception was the Church threatening to Murder people. Just saying~

      • Just wondering if theres a large number of dead bodies that have been lost at sea, the amount of ashes that have been scattered at sea, the amount of islands that have sunk where people were burried, the amount of many many bodies from the ancient times to now that have died and their bones have returned to the land/sea from all around the world, could that be the reason why there is DNA AND RNA found in sea water 🤷‍♀️

I love science and scientists, and they’re effort to really unfold the origin of life. Of course the scientists quest for knowledge is part of what Allah said to prophet Mohammed peace and blessing upon him. “We thought a man kind what he knows not.” That was the verse called read. I wish scientists can explain how in the world does the embrio formation explained by some who does even have basic education 1400 years ago before science without any experiment??? So I suggest they need to go back to scriptures Quran and bile. The scientists experiment should address or should be able to address both religious beliefs and believers or the study should have always sound like a guess work which is not. In other words scientists should have audiences from all walk of life. And that work well done.

I think by majority it’s all organized good to know phosphate in the ocean gives hope about your elements need to clean up and free them restore!

  25. This is perhaps interesting, but unconvincing. What is life really, but a system in equilibrium whose parts are in disequilibrium? I think to get it started, you need a local, stable gradients of some kind — chemical, temperature, or something that provides a path for energy to dissipate. The stronger the gradient, the more complex that dissipation can be, with numerous interacting pathways for that to happen. Experiments like this one have value for sure, but they won’t provide an explanation for more than the origin of a few small processes.

The real “magic” is when such a system is able to become self-sustaining by maintaining that local disequilibrium, even when removed from a region with strong gradients. I would venture that the key to this is a system that reliably exchanges energy to decrease local entropy. This is one reason that I continue to favor environments like undersea black/red/white smokers for the origin of life on earth, even in the light of this kind of research.

  26. To the bible thumpers that say how could something be created from nothing? Well please apply that to God himself? Where did God come from?

  31. God was the creator of earth. We are not gods like we see. Satan is a deceiver. Why is there so, many questions about the universe. Look the answer is in front of us. God. He is the creator of all things in the universe. We are just his people but, we became so, arrogant that the world has forgotten about his teaching’s. This is a disgrace to this country even, the laws of God are changing. Every other religions I see are getting their rights too speak their minds without hearing the other’s. We are fighting. Why? We need too learn respect towards one another. Science is great. It is interesting but, some things have too let God reveal to us in time. Everything is rush, rush, rush. Why? The universe wasn’t created on it’s own. How do we know? Arrogance. So, I guess the universe was created with no creator? How do we know? Hmmmmm? So, I’m assuming no one saw God using his works to create the earth, then the land and the water, plants, trees, things we eat, our first parents Adam and Eve. How do we know he is up there watching our bad behaviors we are doing today? When we do something wrong God is up there and will smack us in the face when we do something that is not right. Do you believe that? I guess not but, I do in faithful time. So One question? Does anyone believe who created us and how we are born? It’s God giving us life. This world that God created is beyond twisted demonic arrogant of people that doesn’t trust him. God is very angry. I hope he forgives us when he arrives with his angry rage. In the schools and workplaces we can’t discuss God because of things he said in the Bible. I’m assuming other religions have the freedom too shut God down. I don’t understand this arrogance of people? God said everyone has a free will. Good or bad. I leave these things to him to judge. I will just leave things the way they are. Life is precious and we shouldn’t ruin it because of arrogance. Learn. Pray. Live in peace with God. I’m learning in my journey not with man. God is number 1. No one else but, God. This is where I will end it. May there be peace one day. Good night.

  33. I’m sorry, but my sound mind tells me that something as complex as a human body or even animals could not have just appeared because of chemicals in our sea water. I’m sorry but your mind is not a sound as you think it is. Scientists have not made any pronouncements on the origin of life simply because they do not yet know. You claim to know, but without evidence. In the absence of solid evidence, “I don’t know,” is the only correct (dare I say, sound) answer.

  34. People should not mix science with religion. Religion is man made fiction which anyone can easily understand if wants to keep mind open.

The fact that this is an article designed to be beyond the reading capabilities of the majority of 18-30 year olds in the US (*29%) that read at a 7rh to 8th grade level. Frankly, one article demands that I must treat scitechdaily as a propaganda machine, charlatan,compromised- but of you cam just prove its sheer incompetence, it wouldn’t require the lake of fire.

Without abiogenesis a creator is absolutely necessary, but we can see this clearly with Webb and our most powerful microscopy technologies.simulation theory is ridiculous, and it only evades the imevitable admissions regarding magic rocks, an absurd primordial soup unbefiting a “hard” scifi game or movie. You don’t explain the intimacies of sexual reproduction in ways that are not age appropriate to a child. You explain to them they came into existence as loved, desired, and intentional. That is where we begin. It is what our sacred texts timelessly convey to humanity both in our scientific infancy (biblical iron age) AND as we “grow up” in our maturing understanding of the universe.

Without the centrality of our source in love both sex and science can be used destructively in ways that equate to a self referential gratification that is nothing other than porn i.e. raping the earth and the environmetment to satisfy our consumeristic lust (science/culture in “teen age mode” ?)

Humanity’s MATURITY will arise when we combine scientific knowledge with divine wisdom, when we are able to use our scientific insights as originating out of and being practiced compassionately in love with concern for ALL living things becoming caretakers, (our original Eden’s occupation not abusers) as implied in sacred writings.

The priest Gregor Mendel opened discoveries leading to genetics. The priest Georges Lemaître proposed the Big Bang theory. The priest Teilhard de Chardin saw all matter as evolving in conciousness until it (we) find our Omega Point in Christ who will be all in all. Time to grow up ?

  44. As this short video series illustrates, the issues of abiogenesis are like jumping across the Grand Canyon. Having phosphorus available for ATP is great, but you need ATP synthase. But you can’t make ATP synthase without ATP. And that is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of irreducible complexity in the most simple origin of life scenario.

If I wrote a book about how the world was created by a dog named Jeff and raised a bunch of children on it they would grow up and believe they were the one true faith.
You mock science for looking for answers, but you were handed a book and joined a fan club and now you believe that’s it, you have it all and need nothing else. Religion was made to ease the pain of death and loss for people who were frightened being at the mercy of a world that is so much bigger than us, and it’s promise of eternal paradise makes you think so little of the lives you have here and now that you turn your backs on the idea of growing and advancing. Because god will always be there to change your diaper and tell you he forgives you for getting drunk and having impure thoughts about your daughter’s softball teammates.
You crave the comfort of being a child who doesn’t have to worry about the anxieties of the world, because dad has it all figured out for you, and unlike most dads he isn’t afraid to tell you he loves you. It is the fantasy of scared, lonely children who felt deprived of affection growing up and abandoned upon adulthood. Enjoy your self medication.
Science doesn’t have all of the answers, but real scientists openly admit that, and we’re always looking to learn more.

Cool, salty water and phosprous. it doesnt put up a accurate depiction on how life evolved from amino acids to those amino acids structuring themselves to bring about different oranisms. while it is a neccasary compound for life it shouldn’t be suggested that this was a signifigant factor that led to life on earth without experimentation.

  51. Only life can create life.
Science itself shows through DNA discoveries the existence of an intelligent designer.
DNA is information. Can information come from an unintelligent source ? No, information proves a source of intelligence existed to create everything that has DNA.Mayby this is too simple for some to understand but seems to obvious to argue against.Again, can information come from an unintelligent source ?

  52. Who is right and who is wrong? Its alwayse more interesting to read the comments because one side states their beliefs, faiths, thoughts, and the other bashes them because because they have a difference of opinion. Moreover, the side that claims to be tolerant and driven by facts and solid evidence bashes the side that chooses to believe in a creator or lack there of. Who is more intolerant? The person who bashes or the one who chooses to believe.

Regardless of your beliefs, faith, an science, drop your pride read the article and have your own beliefs. The problem with this society today is not the individuals beliefs, but the lack of care for humanity and respect for others opinions. If I choose to worship a higher being and you choose to follow, good. If I choose no to believe, and you want to tag along it is YOUR individual choice. Leave us alone and let us choose but don’t bash. Thats what children and teenagers do and that has no place in society.

  53. It’s very sad to me that these scientists can look know and see galaxies billions of light years away.See God’s creations all around you,And still come to the conclusions that God is Jesus is the creator of all life. The evidence is all there. It is sad to me.I pray for all lost, blind souls.

  54. Strange how all of those ridiculing science live in a world of advanced technology that came through science.

  55. Headline : Scientists solve an origin of life mystery . First sentence of article : Seawater Might have …… Might have and Solved are two different things . I am always seeing this in science articles . Misleading titles . It’s amazing how science has fooled most of their followers with this trap

  56. What is so odd is those who say their is no God do so because they look around but do not see God, so he must not exist yet every single day they wake up they breath air even tho they do not see the air they believe the air is real . Many other things we use in our daily lives like cell phones we know our cell phone works but oh wait we cannot see the radio waves but we believe the radio waves are there because we just spoke to mom on the phone . Look it seems to come down to something coming from nothing , No matter how you look at it there has to be a first mover . Newtons laws on motion only describe things already moving but there must be something to start the movement. Hawking making the statement that because there is a law of gravity the universe can and will create itself out of nothing that’s a straight out contradiction. Because there is ( a law of gravity ) which is something , the universe can and will create itself out of nothing ? What nothing Mr. Hawking sir you just said there was a law of gravity? This nonsense even tho he was a brilliant man…he made that statement and nonsense is still nonsense even if it’s Mr. Hawking who is saying it .
