The Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) is a federally funded research and development center and NASA field center located in Pasadena, California. Established in the 1930s, initially under the sponsorship of the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), JPL is now managed by Caltech under a contractual agreement with NASA. Renowned for its pioneering work in robotic space exploration, JPL is responsible for the development and operation of numerous spacecraft and Mars rovers, including the Voyager probes, the Mars Curiosity rover, and the Perseverance rover. The laboratory’s missions have explored all of the planets in our solar system, as well as asteroids, comets, and the outer reaches of the cosmos. JPL also conducts Earth-orbiting missions, studies Earth’s climate, develops technologies for spacecraft, and collaborates internationally on various space missions.
