GRAVITY is a cutting-edge astronomical instrument that operates as a part of the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI) at the European Southern Observatory in Chile. It is designed to provide precise measurements of astronomical objects with unprecedented detail, focusing on high-resolution imaging and astrometry. GRAVITY combines the light from four telescopes to achieve the resolving power equivalent to a telescope with a diameter of up to 130 meters, allowing it to study phenomena such as the environments around supermassive black holes, young stellar objects, and exoplanets. One of GRAVITY’s notable achievements includes providing compelling evidence of the effects of general relativity near the supermassive black hole at the center of our galaxy, Sagittarius A*. This has made GRAVITY a significant tool in modern astrophysics, offering insights into fundamental questions about the universe’s structure and the nature of gravity.
