The cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) is renowned for being the fastest land animal, capable of reaching speeds up to 70 miles per hour in short bursts covering distances up to 500 meters, and can accelerate from 0 to 60 miles per hour in just a few seconds. Native primarily to sub-Saharan Africa and parts of Iran, the cheetah’s slender, aerodynamically built body facilitates its extraordinary speed. Its distinctive black tear-streak lines running from the corners of its eyes to its mouth help to protect its vision from the harsh sunlight while hunting. Cheetahs are carnivorous and rely on their speed and stealth to catch a variety of prey, primarily antelopes and hares. They are solitary creatures, with females living alone or with their offspring and males sometimes forming small groups called coalitions. Due to habitat loss, human conflicts, poaching, and a reduced gene pool, the cheetah is now listed as vulnerable, with only around 6,000 to 7,000 individuals left in the wild.
