NASA’s Tandem Reconnection and Cusp Electrodynamics Reconnaissance Satellites (TRACERS) mission aims to investigate the fundamental processes of magnetic reconnection, a critical phenomenon that drives energy and particle transfer between the solar wind and Earth’s magnetic field. Using two identical small satellites flying in tandem, TRACERS will study magnetic reconnection events occurring at Earth’s magnetospheric cusps—regions where charged particles from the sun penetrate close to Earth’s atmosphere. By closely monitoring these interactions, TRACERS will provide detailed insights into how solar storms and space weather events impact Earth, enhancing our understanding of space weather dynamics and helping to improve predictive models that safeguard satellites, astronauts, and technology on Earth.
