Browsing: Pioneer Venus Multiprobe Spacecraft

The Pioneer Venus Multiprobe Spacecraft was part of NASA’s Pioneer Venus project, launched in 1978 to study Venus’s atmosphere and surface. The mission consisted of one large bus spacecraft that carried four smaller probes: one large atmospheric probe and three smaller probes. The spacecraft arrived at Venus in December 1978, at which point the probes were released and entered the Venusian atmosphere. These probes transmitted data on the composition, structure, and dynamics of Venus’s atmosphere, including measurements of temperature, pressure, wind speeds, and cloud properties. The mission provided critical data that helped to significantly advance our understanding of Venus, particularly regarding its harsh atmospheric conditions.
