Browsing: Burmese Pythons

Burmese pythons are one of the largest species of snakes, native to a broad swath of Asia, from India to lower China and the Malay Peninsula. However, they are most famously known for their invasive status in the Florida Everglades, where they have established a significant and ecologically damaging population. Adult Burmese pythons are typically 12 to 19 feet long and are known for their beautifully patterned skin, which features brown blotches bordered in black on a light brown or yellowish background. They are constrictors, preying on a wide variety of animals, and have few natural predators within their non-native ecosystems. This invasive population in Florida results from pet releases or escapes, and the pythons have had a substantial negative impact on local wildlife, significantly reducing the populations of native mammals. Conservation efforts and control measures are ongoing to manage their numbers and protect endemic species.
