The Gran Sasso National Laboratory (Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso or LNGS) is one of the largest underground research facilities in the world, located beneath the Gran Sasso mountain in Italy. Operated by Italy’s National Institute for Nuclear Physics (INFN), the lab is renowned for its research in particle physics, astrophysics, and cosmology. Its deep underground location, shielded by 1,400 meters of rock, makes it ideal for experiments requiring extremely low levels of background radiation, such as dark matter detection, neutrino studies, and proton decay research. The laboratory has been involved in several high-profile experiments, including the OPERA and Borexino projects, which have significantly advanced our understanding of fundamental physics.
