SPECULOOS (Search for habitable Planets EClipsing ULtra-cOOl Stars) is an astronomical project designed to search for potentially habitable Earth-sized exoplanets around ultra-cool dwarf stars and brown dwarfs. Initiated in 2017 and primarily based in Chile and Tenerife, SPECULOOS uses a network of robotic telescopes to monitor the skies for transiting planets. The project’s focus on ultra-cool stars, which are smaller and cooler than our Sun, increases the chances of detecting habitable zones where liquid water could exist. SPECULOOS aims to identify and study these exoplanets to better understand their potential for supporting life and to provide targets for future, more detailed observations with advanced telescopes like the James Webb Space Telescope.
