Fat is a macronutrient that is essential for various bodily functions, including energy storage, nutrient absorption, and hormone production. Chemically, fats are triglycerides, consisting of glycerol and three fatty acid chains, which can vary in length and degree of saturation. Fats are categorized into saturated, unsaturated (which includes monounsaturated and polyunsaturated), and trans fats, each affecting health differently. Saturated and trans fats are typically associated with negative health outcomes like heart disease when consumed in excess, while unsaturated fats, found in foods like nuts, seeds, fish, and vegetable oils, offer cardiovascular benefits. Besides being a dense energy source, fats also contribute to cell structure, protect organs, aid in the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K), and provide essential fatty acids that the body cannot synthesize. Dietary guidelines recommend moderate fat intake, emphasizing the quality and types of fats consumed to maintain overall health.
