Browsing: GERD

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a chronic digestive disorder where stomach acid frequently flows back into the tube connecting your mouth and stomach (esophagus). This acid reflux can irritate the lining of your esophagus, leading to symptoms such as heartburn, regurgitation, and discomfort, often worsening after meals or when lying down. GERD can also cause more severe complications like esophagitis, esophageal strictures, and an increased risk of esophageal cancer. Treatment typically involves lifestyle changes, such as dietary modifications, weight loss, and avoiding triggers like alcohol and smoking. Medications may include antacids, H2 receptor blockers, and proton pump inhibitors to reduce acid production and heal the esophagus. In severe cases, surgical options may be considered to strengthen the esophageal sphincter.
