The Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST), now known as the Vera C. Rubin Observatory, is a groundbreaking astronomical observatory currently under construction in Chile. Scheduled to begin full operations in the mid-2020s, the LSST is designed to survey the entire southern sky repeatedly over a 10-year period, creating an unprecedentedly detailed and dynamic map of the universe. The observatory’s wide-field telescope will capture images of billions of stars and galaxies, allowing scientists to study everything from the structure of the Milky Way to the nature of dark matter and dark energy. Its rapid cadence of observation will enable the detection of transient events, such as supernovae and near-Earth asteroids, in real-time. The LSST is expected to revolutionize our understanding of the cosmos by providing a vast, publicly accessible database of the changing night sky.
