New Horizons is a NASA space probe launched in 2006 with the primary mission of exploring Pluto and the Kuiper Belt. After a nearly decade-long journey, it made its historic flyby of Pluto in July 2015, capturing the first close-up images and data of the dwarf planet and its moons. The mission revealed Pluto’s surprisingly complex geology and atmosphere, challenging previous assumptions about distant icy worlds. Since then, New Horizons has continued its journey deeper into the Kuiper Belt, conducting flybys and collecting data on other ancient, icy bodies. It remains a symbol of exploration at the farthest reaches of our solar system.
