The Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) is the largest optical telescope in the Southern Hemisphere, located in the Northern Cape of South Africa. It was completed in 2005 and is part of the South African Astronomical Observatory. SALT’s primary mirror is composed of 91 hexagonal segments that collectively span a diameter of 11 meters, enabling it to capture and analyze faint light from distant celestial objects. The telescope is used for a variety of scientific investigations, including the study of stellar populations, galaxy evolution, and the spectroscopy of transient or variable objects. SALT’s location in the Southern Hemisphere provides astronomers with a unique vantage point for observing the southern skies, complementing observations made by Northern Hemisphere telescopes.
