Tourette Syndrome is a neurological disorder characterized by involuntary movements and vocalizations called tics. These tics can range from mild to severe and typically include sudden, repetitive movements like blinking, shoulder shrugging, or facial grimacing, along with vocal tics such as grunting, throat clearing, or, in some cases, inappropriate speech (known as coprolalia). Tourette Syndrome often emerges in childhood, with symptoms generally appearing between the ages of 5 and 10. The exact cause is unknown, but it is believed to involve genetic and environmental factors affecting brain regions that control movement. While there is no cure, many individuals with Tourette Syndrome lead normal lives, and treatments such as behavioral therapy and medication can help manage symptoms.
