Browsing: Autoimmune Disorders
Autoimmune disorders are conditions in which the immune system mistakenly attacks the body’s own tissues, mistaking them as foreign invaders. This abnormal immune response can lead to inflammation, damage, and dysfunction of various body organs and systems. There are over 80 types of autoimmune disorders, including Type 1 diabetes, where the immune system attacks insulin-producing cells in the pancreas; rheumatoid arthritis, which primarily affects the joints; and systemic lupus erythematosus, which can impact the skin, joints, kidneys, brain, and other organs. The exact causes of autoimmune disorders are not fully understood but are believed to involve a combination of genetic predisposition and environmental factors such as infections and exposure to chemicals. Treatment typically focuses on reducing immune system activity with medications like anti-inflammatory drugs, immunosuppressants, and biologics. Managing these disorders often requires a multidisciplinary approach to help patients maintain their quality of life.
