Fuel is any material that can be used to produce energy through the process of combustion or other chemical reactions. Common types of fuel include fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and natural gas, which are derived from the geological processes acting on organic materials over millions of years. There are also biofuels, which are obtained from contemporary biological processes, such as ethanol from corn and biodiesel from vegetable oils. Additionally, fuels can be classified into solid, liquid, and gas forms, each with specific applications, like solid wood and coal in heating, liquid gasoline and diesel in transportation, and gaseous propane and natural gas in heating and cooking. The energy released from fuels is fundamental for electricity generation, heating, transportation, and industrial processes. However, the combustion of fossil fuels is a major source of greenhouse gases, which contributes to climate change, prompting a global shift towards renewable energy sources.
