A heart attack, medically known as myocardial infarction, occurs when blood flow to a part of the heart is blocked for a long enough time to cause significant damage to the heart muscle. This is most often caused by the buildup of plaque (a mix of fat, cholesterol, and other substances) in the coronary arteries, which can rupture and form a clot that impedes blood flow. The lack of oxygen-rich blood can lead to the death of heart muscle cells, a condition that is potentially life-threatening. Symptoms of a heart attack can vary but often include chest pain, shortness of breath, nausea, and cold sweats. Prompt medical treatment is critical to restore blood flow and minimize heart damage. Lifestyle changes, medication, and in some cases, surgical interventions are common post-heart attack strategies to prevent future attacks and improve heart health.
