Browsing: Operation IceBridge

Operation IceBridge was a NASA mission aimed at monitoring changes in polar ice. Launched in 2009, this mission served as a stopgap between the ICESat missions, with the first ICESat having completed operations in 2009 and its successor, ICESat-2, launching in 2018. Operation IceBridge utilized a fleet of aircraft equipped with airborne remote sensing instruments, including radar, lidar, and cameras, to create a three-dimensional view of Arctic and Antarctic ice sheets, ice shelves, and sea ice. This extensive data collection helped scientists gain a deeper understanding of how interactions between ice, oceans, and the atmosphere impact the Earth’s climate, providing crucial insights into the effects of global warming.
