The Opportunity Rover, part of NASA’s Mars Exploration Rover Mission, was a robotic explorer that far exceeded its expected operational life, providing valuable data from the Martian surface for over 15 years. Launched in July 2003 and landing on Mars in January 2004, Opportunity was tasked with investigating the Martian terrain to gather insights into the planet’s geology and past environmental conditions, particularly the history of water. The rover made several significant discoveries, including evidence of ancient water flows and the mineral hematite, suggesting that Mars once had wetter conditions that might have been suitable for life. Opportunity’s mission, which was expected to last just 90 Martian days, continued until June 2018, when a severe dust storm ended its communication with Earth, marking a triumphant end to its remarkable journey of exploration.
