Browsing: Pigmentation

Pigmentation refers to the coloring of an organism’s skin, hair, feathers, or other tissues, primarily determined by the types and amounts of melanin produced by cells called melanocytes. In humans, skin pigmentation varies extensively among populations and is an evolutionary adaptation to varying levels of ultraviolet radiation from the sun. Besides providing coloration, pigmentation offers protection against UV damage, and plays a role in camouflage, sexual selection, and social communication in various species. Abnormalities in pigmentation can lead to conditions such as albinism, vitiligo, and melanoma. Research into pigmentation not only helps in understanding these conditions but also contributes to fields like genetics, anthropology, and biology, enhancing our comprehension of evolutionary processes and disease dynamics.
