Sound in science refers to vibrations that propagate as mechanical waves of pressure and displacement, through a medium such as air, water, or solid materials. These waves are initiated by the vibrating motion of an object, which causes the air particles around it to move in patterns of high and low pressure known as sound waves. Human ears detect these waves as sound when they cause the eardrum to vibrate. The characteristics of sound waves, including their frequency, wavelength, and amplitude, determine the pitch, speed, and loudness of the sound as perceived by the listener. Sound waves can vary greatly in frequency, from very low-pitch infrasound to very high-pitch ultrasound, beyond the range of human hearing. Sound is used in many applications, including communication through speech and music, as well as in technologies like ultrasound imaging and sonar.
