The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) is a federal agency that oversees policies related to food, agriculture, natural resources, and related issues. Established by President Abraham Lincoln in 1862, often referred to as “The People’s Department,” the USDA’s scope of responsibilities includes assisting farmers with their farming operations, ensuring food safety, conducting nutrition research and education, and managing national forests and grasslands. It also administers programs designed to meet the country’s food security needs, promote agricultural trade and production, protect natural resources, foster rural development, and administer food assistance programs such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). The USDA is critical in implementing policy and regulations that help maintain and develop the U.S. agriculture industry while protecting the environment, promoting sustainable practices, and ensuring the safety and quality of the food supply.
