Lizards are a widespread group of squamate reptiles, with over 6,000 species ranging across all continents except Antarctica. They vary significantly in size, color, and shape, from the tiny 16 mm long dwarf gecko to the 3 meter long Komodo dragon. Most lizards have scaly skin, external ear openings, and, unlike snakes, typically have four legs (though some, like the glass lizard, are legless). These reptiles are known for their ability to adapt to various environments, from deserts to forests. Lizards are mostly carnivorous, feeding on insects and other small animals, but some species are omnivorous or herbivorous. Many lizards have unique survival features, such as the ability to change color, detach their tails to escape predators, and, in some cases, glide through the air. Lizards play significant roles in their ecosystems as both predators and prey, and they are often studied for their adaptations and behaviors that reflect their evolutionary success.
