Browsing: Cloud Forest

Cloud forests, also known as montane rainforests or fog forests, are unique ecosystems characterized by high humidity and persistent cloud cover at the canopy level. Found primarily in mountainous regions across the tropics and subtropics, these forests experience consistent moisture from the clouds and fog, even in the absence of rainfall. This constant dampness promotes a lush, dense vegetation cover and a rich biodiversity, including a variety of ferns, mosses, orchids, and towering trees often draped in epiphytes. Cloud forests are crucial for water regulation; they capture moisture from the fog, which then replenishes groundwater supplies and river systems, supporting both ecosystems and human populations downstream. However, these forests are among the most threatened ecosystems due to climate change, which shifts cloud formations and patterns, and deforestation, leading to significant concerns about their preservation and the global ecological consequences of their decline.
