Gout is a form of inflammatory arthritis characterized by sudden, severe attacks of pain, swelling, redness, and tenderness in the joints, often affecting the base of the big toe. It occurs when urate crystals accumulate in the joints, a result of elevated levels of uric acid in the blood, which can form when the body produces too much uric acid or excretes too little. Gout attacks can come suddenly and are often painful enough to wake someone from sleep. Risk factors include diet (especially consumption of red meat, seafood, and beverages sweetened with fructose or containing alcohol), obesity, certain medical conditions, and family history. Management and prevention of gout involve medications to reduce uric acid levels and inflammation, lifestyle changes such as dietary modifications, weight management, and adequate hydration. Chronic gout may lead to more frequent attacks and could cause joint damage if not properly managed.
