The National Optical Astronomy Observatory (NOAO) was a U.S.-based research organization that provided open access to advanced ground-based optical and infrared telescopes for the astronomy community. Operated by the National Science Foundation (NSF), the NOAO supported scientific research through facilities such as Kitt Peak National Observatory in Arizona and Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory in Chile. NOAO enabled astronomers to explore fundamental questions about the universe, including galaxy formation, stellar evolution, and cosmic phenomena. In 2019, the NOAO’s operations were integrated into the National Optical-Infrared Astronomy Research Laboratory (NOIRLab), continuing its mission to facilitate groundbreaking discoveries in observational astronomy.
