The North Pole is the northernmost point on Earth, located at the top of the globe, where the Earth’s axis of rotation meets its surface. It lies in the middle of the Arctic Ocean, surrounded by drifting sea ice rather than land. Unlike Antarctica, which is a landmass covered by ice, the North Pole is entirely ocean, with ice that changes in thickness and extent depending on the season. The North Pole experiences extreme climate conditions, including six months of continuous daylight (polar day) in the summer and six months of darkness (polar night) in the winter. It has long been a point of fascination for explorers, with the first successful expedition to reach it credited to Robert Peary in 1909, though this is still debated. The region is ecologically significant, supporting Arctic wildlife such as polar bears, seals, and migratory birds, and is also at the center of geopolitical interests due to its potential resources, particularly oil and natural gas.
