In an incredible twist of fate, a retired chicken farmer unearthed a 240-million-year-old amphibian fossil in a pile of rocks meant for a garden wall, leading to one of the most extraordinary paleontological finds in New South Wales.

Ancient Fossil Discovery in a Backyard Wall

A fossilized amphibian that dates back 240 million years has now been officially named and described by researchers from UNSW Sydney and the Australian Museum. The discovery was first made in the 1990s when a retired chicken farmer collected stones from a local quarry to build a garden retaining wall. Among those rocks was a remarkable fossil, which was later donated to the Australian Museum in Sydney.

The fossil belongs to a newly identified species called Arenaerpeton supinatus, meaning “supine sand creeper.” According to palaeontologist Lachlan Hart, who works with both UNSW Science and the Australian Museum, the specimen includes most of the skeleton and, unusually, also preserves the outlines of its skin.

Bones, Skin, and a Peek Into the Past

“This fossil is a unique example of a group of extinct animals known as temnospondyls, which lived before and during the time of the dinosaurs,” says Mr. Hart, a PhD candidate in the School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences (BEES) at UNSW.

“We don’t often find skeletons with the head and body still attached, and the soft tissue preservation is an even rarer occurrence.”

Arenaerpeton lived in freshwater river systems that once flowed through the Sydney Basin during the Triassic period. Mr. Hart believes it likely preyed on ancient fish such as Cleithrolepis, although little else is known about the other creatures it may have coexisted with at the time.

A Hefty Creature With Fierce Features

“Superficially, Arenaerpeton looks a lot like the modern Chinese Giant Salamander, especially in the shape of its head,” Mr. Hart says.

“However, from the size of the ribs and the soft tissue outline preserved on the fossil, we can see that it was considerably more heavyset than its living descendants. It also had some pretty gnarly teeth, including a pair of fang-like tusks on the roof of its mouth.”

Mr. Hart says what is exciting about the discovery is that Arenaerpeton is large, estimated to be about 1.2m from head to tail, when most other closely related animals that lived at the same time were small.

    Evolution Through Extinction Events

“The last of the temnospondyls were in Australia 120 million years after Arenaerpeton, and some grew to massive sizes. The fossil record of temnospondyls spans across two mass extinction events, so perhaps this evolution of increased size aided in their longevity.”

Dr. Matthew McCurry, Senior Lecturer in UNSW’s School of BEES and Curator of Palaeontology at the Australian Museum says the fossil is a significant find in Australian paleo history.

“This is one of the most important fossils found in New South Wales in the past 30 years, so it is exciting to formally describe it,” says Dr. McCurry, who is also a co-author on the study. “It represents a key part of Australia’s fossil heritage.”

The study has been published in the Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology.

Fascinating! I love having discussions with friends about science and evolution as well. I share the mindset that science is changing every day. The discovery of new species is a prime example of this. We only know what we know at that moment in time. A new species, a new star, a new plant could be found in another minute , another state or in another country which could change everything related, as we know it. Simply fascinating and it certainly makes me think that in the big scope of things, we are pretty irrelevant 😉

I believe getting the facts about the age is not accurate.
Planet Earth is no where near millions of years old. No matter what science tells our youth passing on such nonsense will only confuse truth. In the case of millions of years. I believe there is no way to calculate this amount accurately. Bones would never wear 100,000. Years & that’s even a large stretch to prove.

You are a Kook. I suppose that you don’t believe in atoms either? The reason that I ask is because measuring the specific decay of certain carbon molecules is how we accurately measure the age of objects millions of years old.

After you measured those things with atomic decay who did you consult to verify it’s accuracy. Methuselah?

Totally agree. Evolution is only only a theory . They have to explain to me why there is no evidence of life in these billions of years where it should be instead it’s found in shallow earth

Carbon dating is only accurate to 50,000 years. Millions of years is pure speculation. Why resort to calling Timothy a kook? Why speculation about believing in atoms? You resort to bullying as you have no idea what you’re texting about here. Grow up. Stop believing in scientific dogma and think/research for yourself. It’s much more fulfilling than repeating what some speaker or teacher said.

Carbon 14 dating doesn’t work beyond 100,000 years. It cannot prove that salamander is 240,000,000 years old. It’s only a guess and not a good one at that.

Timothy… it’s not the bones that last thousands of years… it’s the fossilization of bones that preserve the story… I don’t know everything Timothy… but I know this… the Earth is not flat… it is several millions of years old… and that we are an insignificant speck in a vast universe

Brian, science is forever learning, changing, and growing. You believe, you don’t know. Scientific “fact” is a misnomer. What was “fact” 100 years ago has been changed since on thousands of topics. What is fact today will be changed in days to come. You jumped on a bandwagon to attack Timothy because it threatened What you believe…. not what you know. And certainly the earth is not flat… we have an amazing topography on our enclosed ecosystem. The waters however do all sit level. And I believe water seeking and maintaining level is as close to an undisputed fact as you can get. As far as being insignificant we are all as insignificant as each bee and butterfly we depend on to pollinate and thus maintain our flailing home.

Your like my neighbor she says the earth is 10,000 years old, I guess the both of you know more than thousands of scientists.. so the Americas move the speed of a growing fingernail away from Europe and Africa,, i can tell you that wasn’t in your calculations, but the calculations indicate it started 300 million years ago and it took approximately 100mil to be completely separated,,, also the moon has moved 40,000 miles since dinosaurs,, that’s also done with calculations , 3.8 centimeters per year further,, that the moon is moving away today all verified with the drill samples that shows the tides that were much bigger when the
moon was closer… formations of the galopogus island chains another geological measurements,,, there’s so much evidence of the earth age,, without carbon dating ,

“speculation about believing in atoms.” our understanding of sub-atomic particles has been shown to be incredibly reliable. the exact same model of how atoms work is used both to measure age based on atomic decay and to build nuclear weapons. if it were speculation, nuclear weapons wouldn’t work. nor would your cell phone or computers. you’re trying to dress up rank ignorance as skepticism, but you just look silly.

Just stay up to date with archeologist and see what they find around the world. Especially in the middle east. It’s prove the Bible is true on the things they find and what the Bible say. They have found Jerico, Sodem and Gomora. Egypt also has alot of evidence that point to tge bible being true. So if we start there we know that the earth is only around 7 thousands years, if even that old. Not even 1 million.

The caption on the artist’s illustration at the top of the article states that this creature is the ancestor of today’s Chinese Giant Salamander. This is incorrect. This extinct creature is from a line of amphibians that finally died out at the KT extinction event (perhaps due to becoming too large and specialized). The Chinese Giant Salamander is an example of convergent evolution from another line of amphibians that did survive, and evolved a similar body plan to fulfill the same ecological niche.

So I’ve been logging for years and one night in the dark when I was coming out of the woods I had to use my flashlight and I ended up coming up on a old growth log and I seen these eyes. Peering out from the decayed wood and as I got closer it was a salamander and I believe they’re called Goliath salamanders and it was 3 ft long slimy slow moving

Alli”The Waitress”, sorry, or not…I’m sorry for you on the day of Jesus’ return. Oh yes, God is VERY real, and we do have an Almighty Creator of this magnificent earth and universe, with all its wonders & mysteries, and unanswered questions. And yes, science is also a wonderful gift, full of amazing discoveries & tools to help us understand much of God’s creation and how it can help us & we can help each other. And I’m completely cool with WAITING to find out answers to the really big questions about things that just don’t add up right now, just don’t make sense, the numbers, the years, the dinosaurs, all that…because I have enough on my plate in THIS life just trying to be kind to my neighbor, like Jesus taught, and He can fill me in later in Heaven. The alternative is only one other choice, and scientifically speaking, if you know anything at all about a lava bed…imagine eternity LIVING in one.

Nobody is responding because man created Gods well before Jesus’s birthday which was most likely in the fall. For those of you too afraid to believe in the real truth. I feel for you. Hopefully you’ll realize it before you reincarnate and come back and get brainwashed again to be afraid. You’re not going to a firey pit. If you’re evil you will come back and suffer evil much more so than you dished out. Called Karma. Been around since before your false religion
