Ceres is the largest object in the asteroid belt, which lies between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. Classified as a dwarf planet, Ceres has a diameter of about 940 kilometers and was discovered in 1801 by Giuseppe Piazzi. This celestial body is notable for its round shape, which is due to its gravity pulling it into a spherical form, a characteristic typically seen in planets rather than asteroids. Ceres is composed of rock and ice and has a surface that features a mixture of water-ice and various hydrated minerals like clays. NASA’s Dawn spacecraft, which orbited Ceres from 2015 to 2018, provided detailed insights into its surface, including the presence of a large number of craters, some mysterious bright spots which are believed to be deposits of salts, and evidence suggesting a past presence of liquid water. These findings have fueled interest in Ceres as a potential harbor for microbial life and a window into the history of our solar system.
