Estrogen is a group of steroid hormones that play a crucial role in the development and functioning of the female reproductive system and secondary sexual characteristics. Primarily produced in the ovaries, estrogens are responsible for regulating the menstrual cycle, maintaining pregnancy, and preparing the body for childbirth. They also influence bone density, skin health, and cardiovascular function. Although estrogens are considered female hormones, they are also present in males in smaller amounts, contributing to functions such as libido and spermatogenesis. Imbalances in estrogen levels can lead to various health issues, including menstrual irregularities, menopausal symptoms, and an increased risk of osteoporosis and certain cancers.
