Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder characterized by repeated interruptions in breathing during sleep. These pauses in breathing, known as apneas, can last from a few seconds to minutes and may occur numerous times throughout the night, disrupting normal sleep patterns. The two main types are obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), caused by a physical blockage of the airway, and central sleep apnea (CSA), which occurs when the brain fails to send proper signals to the muscles that control breathing. Common symptoms include loud snoring, daytime fatigue, and restless sleep. If left untreated, sleep apnea can lead to serious health complications such as heart disease, hypertension, and stroke.
