Contact lenses are thin, curved lenses placed directly on the surface of the eyes to correct vision. They can be used as alternatives to glasses, offering cosmetic and practical advantages such as a natural field of view, no fogging, and compatibility with sports and outdoor activities. Contacts are made from several types of polymers and are categorized mainly into two types: soft and rigid gas permeable (RGP).

Soft contact lenses are more comfortable and easier to adapt to, making them the choice for most contact lens wearers. They are made from hydrogels or silicone hydrogels, which allow oxygen to pass through the lens to the cornea. Rigid gas permeable lenses, while less comfortable initially, provide clearer, crisper vision and are more durable and resistant to deposit buildup.

Contact lenses require proper handling to avoid the risk of eye infections. Wearers must follow specific cleaning and storage procedures, and adhere to the wearing schedule prescribed by their eye care professional. Extended wear lenses allow for overnight use, but increase the risk of infection. Daily disposables are a convenient option that minimizes this risk by eliminating the need for cleaning.
