Browsing: Cretaceous Period
The Cretaceous Period was the last and longest segment of the Mesozoic Era, spanning from about 145 to 66 million years ago. It is known for its rich diversity of life, particularly the dominance of dinosaurs such as Tyrannosaurus rex and Triceratops. During this period, flowering plants (angiosperms) began to flourish, altering ecosystems and food chains. The continents were in the process of breaking apart, leading to the formation of new oceans and a warmer global climate. The Cretaceous Period ended with a mass extinction event, most likely caused by an asteroid impact, which led to the extinction of nearly 75% of Earth’s species, including the non-avian dinosaurs.
