General Relativity is a theory of gravitation that was developed by Albert Einstein between 1907 and 1915. According to this theory, the observed gravitational attraction between masses results from the warping of space and time by those masses. Essentially, General Relativity provides a new description of gravity as a geometric property of space and time, or spacetime. Instead of viewing gravity as a force that acts between masses, Einstein’s theory treats gravity as a change in the properties of space and time, which in turn affects the movements of objects. The theory has been tested multiple times and is supported by strong empirical evidence. It explains a range of phenomena that classical mechanics cannot, from the precession of Mercury’s orbit to the bending of light by gravity and the time dilation observed in global positioning system (GPS) satellites. This theory remains a cornerstone of modern physics and has profound implications for cosmology and astrophysics.
