GPS, or Global Positioning System, is a satellite-based navigation system that allows users to determine their exact location anywhere on Earth. The system was developed and is maintained by the United States Department of Defense and became fully operational in 1995. GPS works through a network of about 30 satellites orbiting the Earth at an altitude of approximately 20,000 kilometers. These satellites transmit signals that can be received by devices equipped with GPS receivers, such as smartphones, cars, and specialized GPS units.
