Researchers Identify Potential Target for Treating Inner-Ear Bone Erosion
Researchers show that the possible cause of local bone erosion in cholesteatomas are fibroblasts from the bone that express a protein called activin A. Chronic…
Hearing is a critical sensory process that involves the detection and interpretation of sound by the ears and brain. Sound waves enter the ear canal, causing the eardrum to vibrate. These vibrations are then transmitted through the tiny bones in the middle ear to the cochlea, a fluid-filled structure in the inner ear. The cochlea converts these vibrations into electrical signals that are sent to the brain via the auditory nerve. The brain then interprets these signals as sound, allowing us to discern different sounds, their origins, and their meanings. Hearing enables communication through spoken language, enhances our ability to detect changes in our surroundings, and significantly enriches our interactions with the world. It is a complex and finely tuned system that can be affected by a range of factors, including age, noise exposure, and disease, leading to hearing impairment or loss.
