Leukemia is a type of cancer that primarily affects the blood and bone marrow, characterized by the rapid production of abnormal white blood cells. These defective cells do not function properly and can crowd out healthy blood cells, impairing the body’s ability to fight infections, carry oxygen, and control bleeding. Leukemia is categorized based on the speed of progression—acute, which develops quickly, and chronic, which progresses more slowly—and the type of blood cells affected, mainly lymphocytes or myeloid cells.
