Leukemia is a type of cancer that primarily affects the blood and bone marrow, characterized by the rapid production of abnormal white blood cells. These defective cells do not function properly and can crowd out healthy blood cells, impairing the body’s ability to fight infections, carry oxygen, and control bleeding. Leukemia is categorized based on the speed of progression—acute, which develops quickly, and chronic, which progresses more slowly—and the type of blood cells affected, mainly lymphocytes or myeloid cells. Common symptoms include fatigue, frequent infections, bleeding or bruising easily, and weight loss. The causes of leukemia are not completely understood but are believed to involve a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Treatment varies depending on the type of leukemia and may include chemotherapy, radiation therapy, targeted therapy, and bone marrow transplant. Advances in medical research have significantly improved the prognosis and treatment options for many patients with leukemia.
