The Lunar Orbital Platform-Gateway, often simply referred to as the Lunar Gateway, is an international space station project led by NASA with the collaboration of other space agencies such as ESA (European Space Agency), Roscosmos (Russia), JAXA (Japan), and CSA (Canada). Planned to orbit the Moon, the Gateway is part of NASA’s Artemis program, which aims to facilitate a sustainable human presence on the Moon and potentially serve as a stepping-stone for future missions to Mars. The Gateway will serve multiple purposes: it will act as a lunar-orbital outpost where astronauts can live and conduct scientific research, a testbed for new technologies, and a staging point for lunar landings and missions to deeper space. Its modular design will allow for a variety of scientific experiments and will support missions that explore more of the lunar surface. Construction of the Gateway is anticipated to begin in the mid-2020s, and it represents a significant advancement in lunar exploration strategy.
