Radiation refers to the emission or transmission of energy in the form of waves or particles through space or through a material medium. It includes a wide range of types, from electromagnetic radiation, such as light, radio waves, and X-rays, to particle radiation, like alpha and beta particles, which are emitted by radioactive materials. Radiation can be classified into ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, based on its ability to ionize atoms and disrupt molecular bonds. Ionizing radiation, which includes ultraviolet light, X-rays, and gamma rays, has enough energy to remove tightly bound electrons from atoms, thus creating ions. Non-ionizing radiation, such as radio waves, microwaves, and visible light, does not have enough energy to ionize atoms. While radiation is naturally occurring and essential in many aspects of modern life, including medical imaging and communications, excessive exposure can be harmful to living organisms, potentially causing health issues like cancer and genetic damage.
