The Roman Space Telescope, formerly known as the Wide Field Infrared Survey Telescope (WFIRST), is a NASA observatory scheduled to launch in the mid-2020s. It is designed to perform wide-field imaging and spectroscopy in the infrared part of the spectrum. The primary goal of the Roman Space Telescope is to address key questions in the areas of dark energy, exoplanets, and infrared astrophysics. By surveying large parts of the sky, the telescope will help scientists understand the nature of dark energy and dark matter by observing the distribution and growth of cosmic structures, as well as explore the atmospheres of distant planets with its coronagraph instrument, which is capable of directly imaging and analyzing exoplanets. The telescope’s wide-field camera will provide a field of view 100 times greater than the Hubble Space Telescope’s infrared instrument, making it an invaluable tool for creating a comprehensive survey of the cosmos in infrared light.
