Astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams are preparing for their return journey on the Crew-9 Dragon spacecraft after initially arriving via the Boeing Starliner.

They, along with newcomers Nick Hague and Aleksandr Gorbunov, completed essential suit and seat checks, setting the stage for their return to Earth scheduled for February 2025.

    Crew-9 Integration and Suit Tests

NASA astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams are fully integrated into the newly arrived Crew-9 spacecraft docked to the International Space Station (ISS). The duo tried on their SpaceX Intravehicular Activity spacesuits and completed pressurized suit leak checks on Tuesday. They also tested the suits’ audio configurations and conducted seat fit checks inside the Dragon spacecraft, completing the work required to return on the spacecraft that delivered NASA astronaut Nick Hague and Roscosmos cosmonaut Aleksandr Gorbunov to the station on September 29.

Expedition 72: Ongoing Missions and Preparations

Williams, space station commander, and Wilmore, flight engineer, will remain on the space station as Expedition 72 crew members completing a science mission aboard the space station and return to Earth in February 2025 with Hague and Gorbunov as part of the agency’s SpaceX Crew-9 mission. With the checks completed, the Crew-9 Dragon now is the normal and emergency return spacecraft for the four-person crew.

    Transition From Crew-8 to Crew-9

The temporary seats built up inside the Crew-8 Dragon spacecraft, that had been serving as an emergency return spacecraft for Williams and Wilmore until Crew-9 arrived, will be dismantled by the crew prior to the spacecraft’s departure from the space station. The Crew-8 spacecraft and its crew of NASA astronauts Matthew Dominick, Michael Barratt, and Jeanette Epps, as well as Roscosmos cosmonaut Alexander Grebenkin, are scheduled to return to Earth in about a week, depending on weather conditions in the splashdown zones off the coast of Florida.

Why do the 2 astronauts have to wait until 2025 to return to earth? Surely they can come back earlier.

Because that was the planned duration of the Crew-9 mission for things unrelated to saving those two. They’re just piggybacking.

The two that went up have double the work to do. But they have some help.

Does space x or the ISS have beds or they sleep in those chairs.
Or tie their self off and just float in air.
I think that’s about the only thing that would stop me from going to space..
I sleep one way and one way only

They have closed upright sleeping pods. As space has no gravity, one can sleep in any position.

Kinda weird that the title doesn’t mention Boeing and the article barely mentions Boeing. Wonder how much money Boeing paid to get their name out of the news…
