Alcohol typically refers to ethanol (ethyl alcohol), the type of alcohol found in alcoholic beverages. It is a psychoactive substance that is produced by the fermentation of sugars by yeast. In various social settings, alcohol is consumed as a beverage for its depressant effects, which can reduce anxiety, inhibition, and feelings of stress when consumed in moderate amounts. However, alcohol also impairs coordination, judgment, and reaction time, and its consumption can increase the risk of accidents, injuries, and other negative health outcomes. Chronic or excessive drinking is associated with serious health issues, including liver diseases, heart problems, and addiction, known as alcohol use disorder. Different cultures have different norms and laws regarding the production, sale, and consumption of alcoholic beverages, reflecting its complex role in society.
