A genome is the complete set of genetic material within an organism, encompassing all of its DNA—or RNA, in some viruses—and containing the instructions needed for growth, development, and function. It includes not only the genes that code for proteins but also vast regions of non-coding sequences that regulate when and how genes are expressed. Studying genomes allows scientists to uncover the evolutionary history of species, identify genetic factors behind diseases, and engineer new solutions in medicine, agriculture, and biotechnology. Advances in genome research are continually opening new windows into the complexity and interconnectedness of life.
