Messenger RNA (mRNA) is a type of RNA molecule that plays a critical role in the process of gene expression within cells. It acts as a messenger between DNA and the protein synthesis machinery of the cell. DNA sequences are transcribed into mRNA molecules, which then carry the genetic information needed to produce proteins from the nucleus to the ribosomes, where translation occurs. Each mRNA molecule corresponds to a specific protein, encoded by a gene in the DNA. The sequence of nucleotides in the mRNA determines the sequence of amino acids in the protein, which in turn determines the protein’s structure and function. Recent advances have leveraged mRNA technology in developing vaccines, such as those for COVID-19, showcasing its potential in modern medicine and biotechnology.
