Researchers have found that older adults suffering from depression age faster than their peers.
Researchers at the University of Connecticut Center on Aging have found that older adults with depression age faster than their peers. This accelerated biological aging is associated with poor physical and brain health, though the severity of depression itself appears unrelated. Accelerated aging is linked to worse cardiovascular health, higher blood pressure, high cholesterol, multiple medical problems, and decreased cognitive performance. The study’s findings open up opportunities for preventive strategies to reduce disability associated with depression in older adults and slow down biological aging. Researchers are now exploring therapies to reduce senescent cells and personalized treatments based on specific patterns of aging-associated proteins.
Older adults with depression are actually aging faster than their peers, University of Connecticut Center on Aging researchers report.
“These patients show evidence of accelerated biological aging, and poor physical and brain health,” which are the main drivers of this association, says Breno Diniz, a UConn School of Medicine geriatric psychiatrist and author of the study, which was recently published in the journal Nature Mental Health.
Diniz and colleagues from several other institutions looked at 426 people with late-in-life depression. They measured the levels of proteins associated with aging in each person’s blood. When a cell gets old, it begins to function differently, less efficiently, than a “young” cell. It often produces proteins that promote inflammation or other unhealthy conditions, and those proteins can be measured in the blood. Diniz and the other researchers compared the levels of these proteins with measures of the participants’ physical health, medical problems, brain function, and the severity of their depression.
To their surprise, the severity of a person’s depression seemed unrelated to their level of accelerated aging. However, they did find that accelerated aging was associated with worse cardiovascular health overall. People with higher levels of aging-associated proteins were more likely to have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and multiple medical problems. The accelerated aging was also associated with worse performance on tests of brain health such as working memory and other cognitive skills.
“Those two findings open up opportunities for preventive strategies to reduce the disability associated with major depression in older adults, and to prevent their acceleration of biological aging,” Diniz, of the UConn Center on Aging, says.
The researchers are now looking at whether therapies to reduce the number of aged, “senescent” cells in a person’s body can improve late-in-life depression. They are also looking at specific sources and patterns of proteins associated with aging, to see if this might lead to personalized treatments in the future.

As a now age 79 lay male with long documented multiple food/additive allergies of a kind not yet recognized, researched, practiced or taught by mainstream medicine (e.g., Dr. Arthur F. Coca, by 1935) who became mildly chronically ill after the FDA approved the expanded use of toxic added ‘cultured-free’ (can cross the blood/brain barrier) MSG as an alleged ‘flavor enhancer’ in the US in 1980, I can state with some forty-two years and counting of certainty that depression is just one comorbidity of mis/un-diagnosed allergy reactions aggravated (or not) with toxic FDA approved food additives in commercially prepared pseudo-food products, including all of the other, mere symptoms, listed in the article.
Perhaps, because the “cytotoxic blood testing for food allergies” I had in late 1981 was medically abandoned in the US shortly thereafter, and my kind of food allergies do not indicate-for with skin-prick and/or RAST IgE antibody allergy testing, the researcher’s kind of senescent cell and SASP protein markers testing could be developed into an affordable, convenient and reliable allergy testing method; the younger the subjects the better. Of course it would be best if the FDA would simply reverse its approvals of added MSG and soy, minimally, and require that commercially prepared food products be as natural, pure and safe as possible. After all, ‘we are what we eat,’ and current disease statistics suggest a serious problem.
