Collaborative research integrating innovative analytical techniques with traditional field geology, conducted in one of the world’s leading geologic laboratories, has provided fresh insights into the Cambrian explosion of life.
Earth’s 4.6-billion-year history has been dominated by single-celled life since shortly after the planet’s formation. However, approximately 500 million years ago, a dramatic event known as the Cambrian “explosion” occurred. During this period, an extraordinary diversity of life forms appeared and became preserved in the fossil record. These fossils included major groups of diverse animals that evolved into animal groups still living today (including humans).
A recent paper by UNM researchers and an expanded collaborative team is featured as the lead science article in GSA Today’s November 2024 issue titled The Cambrian of the Grand Canyon: Refinement of a Classic Stratigraphic Model.
“The Tonto Group of Grand Canyon holds a treasure trove of sedimentary layers and fossils chronicling the Cambrian Explosion some 500 million years ago, when the first animals with hard shells rapidly proliferated and sea levels rose to envelop continents with emerging marine life,” said Carol Dehler, professor at Utah State University.
Dehler was lead author with UNM adjunct professor and paleontologist Fred Sundberg as co-lead, and coauthors included UNM Distinguished Professors Karl Karlstrom and Laurie Crossey, James Hagadorn from Denver Museum of Nature and Science, Mark Schmitz from Boise State University, and Steve Rowland from the University of Nevada Las Vegas.
Refining the McKee Model of Marine Transgression
In addition to research advances, the paper has geoscience education advances that build on the classic model for marine transgression (advance of the seas across the continents) developed 50 years ago on these same rocks by Eddy McKee. The McKee Model, taught to many geology students worldwide, posits gradual deepening and gradual shifts in sedimentary environments.
“Our new model for deposition of the Tonto Group is much more nuanced, showing a mixture of marine and non-marine settings, breaks or unconformities when no sediment was being deposited, and a much faster tempo of evolution. Even more than before, the Tonto Group of Grand Canyon remains one of the most important Cambrian-type sections in the world because of its complete exposure,” says UNM Distinguished Professor Karl Karlstrom.
The National Science Foundation Division of Earth Sciences supported the work. “Our findings are a reminder that science is a process,” Hagadorn said. “Our work in the Grand Canyon, one of the world’s most well-known and beloved landscapes, connects people to this science in a very personal way.”
Further, advanced tools provided new insights into rock sedimentation speeds and offered clues on how rapidly marine species, such as trilobites and other early animals, diversified.
“Our new tandem U-Pb dating methods are refining precise ages for each layer in the succession and for the transitions between trilobite biozones,” said Schmitz, “we are finding that different trilobite species radiated, then went extinct at a very fast, sub-million year, tempo.”

This method involves grinding up the sedimentary rock sample and separating out hundreds of sand-sized zircon crystals that were deposited within the sediment. The U-Pb ratios of the grains are first acquired using a preliminary method for rapid dating, then the youngest grains are precisely dated with a more elaborate (and precise) laboratory method.
A New Framework for Students and Researchers
“Sedimentary rocks are hard to date,” said Crossey “but the deposition of the sediment and fossils entombed within it, must be younger than the age of the youngest grain so with many dates we can bracket sedimentary ages.”

Dehler says the team’s new model, compared to McKee’s model, offers key pathways for both students and researchers to reach a deeper understanding of the Cambrian explosion.
“From the Tonto Group’s 500-meter-thick strata, we’re learning about sea-level rise and the effects of catastrophic tropical storms – probably more powerful than today’s devastating hurricanes. This occurred in a world without land plants and during a period of very hot temperatures when the Earth was ice-free,” said Dehler. “Sea levels were so high that sediments like the Tonto Group were deposited atop most continents in environments that allowed rapid expansion of animal diversity on Earth.”

Wow. It is super obvious that the event that occurred is staring us right in the face. It was a flood of the whole world. That is the only explanation for the sea rise and so much death, not life seen in this level. It was not rapid evolution but rapid extinction from a flood. This 40 days of springs from the earth and rains from the proactive canopy above would have been stronger than a hurricane event. The receeding water clearly carved out the Grand Canyon. The truth is that we just don’t want to believe in a Creator and would rather believe evolution lies that are not supported with evidence. We have made up the million of years measurements to make evelution work for us. But life does not just happen. You can’t get something out of nothing. You have to start with something.

Where does a circle begin? Where did God come from if there always has to be a precursor? If you are willing to accept that God has always existed, why can’t you similarly accept that the universe has always existed, or that the essence of the universe existed before the ‘Big Bang?’
Because the universe is wearing out and running downwards, you wind that back up and it had a beginning regardless. God isn’t made of matter and is outside of time, and so therefore isn’t effected by time and cannot wear out like matter does.

Because God is uncreated eternal spirit, and the cosmos is physical matter and energy. Which is illogical to think of as eternal. Real science always supports the nature of God and reality. Science that tries to function from a godless presupposition always has to take great leaps of unproven conjecture. Articles like this continually repeat the fallacies and unproven aspects of evolution. But repeating them doesn’t make them true. Micro evolution is seen commonly. Macro evolution has never been scientifically shown. One species turning into another species has never been proven. But the root problem with secular science isn’t physical evidence, it’s moral. If there is a creator God, then we are accountable to Him. Modern man doesn’t want to be accountable, so they find ways to deny Him even when it means twisting reality.
A substantial amount of evidence exists for macro evolution. However, that fact does not disprove the existence of a creator God as many would like to conclude.

Those floods came from the waters held in what we now know as “ringwoodite”. ALL of the long term dating methods are flawed. All are based on uniformitarianism. But the pre flood conditions on earth were radically different. Economics and endless warfare motivate technology. Much of technology these days is science-based, of course.
But it’s encouraging that science has taken off itself in so many ways; that so much of it is unlikely to serve man’s homicidal tendencies. It seems wonderful, though unlikely, that the Pay-To-Play US Congress actually supported the Webb telescope out there at its Lagrange Point. Hopefully the results will humble our arrogance but not our curiosity.
People don’t really apprehend cosmic distances. Astronomers construct universes of discourse, models, to operate in the larger universe so alien to the forests and fields our everyday understanding evolved in. In everyday life cosmic distances are incomprehensible.
It’s the same for Deep Time. 500 million years is incomprehensible in everyday understanding. But we do what astronomers do – construct universes of discourse, layers, to go back through the endless lengths of time.
If a mother comes home one afternoon and finds a total mess in the kitchen she looks at it in detail and figures out what happened and what they did or tried to do. The workers in the Grand Canyon were doing the same logically, we think with a better understanding each time. Such knowledge often is quite useful, actually, in theories of oil formation, prospecting, and so on. And now even the life sciences.
If someone thinks there was no 500 million years ago, try this …. Suppose the world was “created” 10 minutes ago, with our memories in place, fossils in place, and so on. Can you prove that’s not true? No, you can’t. But what good did such a theory do you? So make it 6000 years ago. Was that an improvement? Really?

Okay Im here to share my no doubt ever factual knowledge about the creation of the Earth. The universe works in the backwards of time, that is explanation of the almost impossible existence of intellegent life on Earth. The probability of life emerging in this planet even though having conditions sustainable for life is ridiculously low because because of perfect chemistry of biomolecules forming the LUCA Last universal common ancestor.. A single cell organism in which we originated. Also, the luck of preventing complete extinction and the favorabliness of the geological pattern of events that lead to existence of intelligent life. If human civilization evolve into a more successful observer. It is presumed that the future is the actual starting in which leads to the stimulation of the almost perfectly balanced law of physics that can create intelligent civilization of obserevers. Therefore, the existence of human and our observation might explain the complex but functional design of this universe.
Science without ethics, which originate from spiritual beliefs, produces things that are a threat to life, such as nuclear weapons. Religion without science produces superstition. It is prejudice, the desire for power with the wilful misunderstanding of religion that destroys. Religion has always been the foundation of civilisation and human progress throughout history when it is able to unite and inspire people.
Ethics seems to originate with evolved small group primate behavior. Much technological advancement, though, has been motivated by human endless warfare.
Fortunately, religion is in decline except in our US core Confederate Culture Area. However, our child rearing practices will lead to some social disintegration likely leading to a revival of it. In a couple of generations there may be 2 or 3 countries where the US is now. In the past religion served to maintain social organization and discipline in an area. In today’s US that function is being taken over by debt and Oligarchy, not an improvement.

From my naive understanding, the Bible also has an evolutionary history and the earlier ‘versions’ didn’t have lots of current canon such as a resurrection. Whenever man touches something, personal bias gets injected. If nothing evolved and was created as is, why was god soooo obsessed with insects? I say was because not many new life forms are popping up very often.

Weather life was created by God, or developed by time and scientific methods, we may never know. What we do know is that each of us has only a short amount of time to live. Is there really a gap between Genesis 1:1 and 1:2 of millions or billions of years? Why is there no fossil record of man and dinosaurs together? Except for the Flintstones, BC, or Alley Oop in the comics. Why was the earth without form, void, & dark in (Genesis 1:2) ??
Did the fall of Satan put earth into this dark state? Did this fall destroy the lush, misty, reptile cretaceous period of the geological ages? OK all those with knowledge!!!!!!!!!! simple question. WHEN DID SATAN FALL?
Satan cannot fall to nothing. He fell to a created earth. Why does Genesis 2:5-6 say there was no MAN to till the ground? What’s the meaning of RENEW the face of the earth. In Psalms 104:30 ? God created the earth mature like Man Adam. Not a child. Or the earth really is millions or billions of years old!
Man did exist during the dinos. They have found a hominin skull of an 11yo that is 1.8 million years old. Not our species. One that fully matured at 13y.
Dinosaurs have been extinct for 65 million years. 1.8 million years is much more recent. Lucy, (Australopithecus afarensis), the famous hominin, is 3.2 million years old.
Thanks for your comment. I am a Christian and all this evolution nonsense will be handled by our Creator. He who lies about the truth will be held accountable at the Judgement Seat Of Christ. There is no excuse for following man’s wild ideas about how all things started. Just read the Creator’s handbook, called the Bible. The first book Genesis, describes an orderly, intentional design by a trinity that has no beginning and no end. GOD is eternal!

Satan’s fall from heaven is symbolically described in Isaiah 14:12–14 and Ezekiel 28:12–18. Wow, A group of smart people. Long time ago with lots of time on their hands started writing a story some base on fact what they think they saw or through years of story telling. Passed through generations. Control was the groups plan. The group broke up and gave us versions that worked with different mindsets / education if you will
Reading some of the comments at the top and just wanted to leave a little thought. I believe in God and that He created all things. I also believe in the big bang. When God said let there be light, I can guarantee light happened. Abruptly . That being said I believe in the great flood of the Bible. Every nation has a great flood story. The evidence is found all around the globe. Civilizations disappearing at the same time periods that aren’t located in the same hemisphere. The evidence is there. But to admit that’s what it is, science would have to admit that God was a real being and that evolution was just a man made concoction of theory. Animals haven’t changed in thousands of years. So is that saying they are at the peak of their evolutionary existence? I don’t believe that at all. I believe God had a plan, and we are a part of all of that. A very very very small part of a plan made for fellowship with His creation.
North Carolina has a great flood story now as well. Spain too, at about the same time. And there will be more……
I was seriously considering subscribing to this but I have to say, that the comments, like right from the beginning, indicate that your audience are religious idiots. Their perspective on this article are incomprehensible and i can’t blame you but i refuse to associate with any such group .
People argue over the dumbest stuff. A book written by man used to control the population or made up stories of billions of years of earth history when radio carbon dating is no where near an accurate measurement of time. Wake up People. When you have People in power that want to control things. They’ll tell you anything they can to keep the boot on your neck. Why don’t we all put aside our differences and get along till Jesus comes back for his People or the earth shakes us off her back like the fleas we are. Then we’ll all see the truth.
