El Niño’s Evolution: Cutting-Edge Observations From Sentinel-6
Sentinel-6 Michael Freilich monitors Pacific Ocean sea surface heights to gauge El Niño impacts. While 2023’s event seems less intense than 1997 and 2015, it…
The Jason-CS/Sentinel-6 mission, also known as Sentinel-6 Michael Freilich, is a collaborative international project involving NASA, NOAA, ESA, and EUMETSAT aimed at monitoring global sea levels. Launched on November 21, 2020, the mission is designed to extend the data record of sea surface height measurements that are vital for climate research, improving weather forecasts, and monitoring ocean circulation. Sentinel-6 Michael Freilich, the first of two identical satellites, carries on the legacy of the TOPEX/Poseidon and Jason series of sea level missions. It features advanced radar altimetry technology to provide more precise and reliable data on the height of the ocean surface, thus playing a critical role in understanding and tracking sea level rise and its impact on coastal communities around the world. The mission is named in honor of Michael Freilich, a former director of NASA’s Earth Science Division, who was instrumental in advancing Earth science from space.
